That’s a great question! Why can’t it be both? I enjoy going with the flow, but I also prefer to have a loose outline. Spontaneity is excellent, especially when there is some preparation behind it. As a woman, and a Black woman at that, my top priority in navigating the world is always safety, even during my most adventurous moments. Therefore, my approach can adapt depending on the situation.
Recently, I’ve been reflecting on the meaning of the word “safety.” Words take on new layers depending on their context. For example, my office has recently moved to a new location. While it’s technically considered a “safe environment,” my body has struggled to adjust. Transitioning from a more diverse space to one where I am one of the only Black people has felt unsettling. Even when nothing overtly hostile is happening, that shift can create a feeling of deep unease.
