Grounded in What Raised Me

Daily writing prompt
What relationships have a positive impact on you?

The older I get, the more I realize how much my parents shaped me; sometimes loudly, and sometimes in subtle ways I didn’t notice until much later. They weren’t perfect (who is?), but they managed to find a tricky middle ground between applying pressure and showing grace. They pushed me when I needed it, softened their approach when it mattered, and yes, made mistakes along the way that affected me, too.

If I’m being honest, they also gave me something invaluable: a perspective that leans toward hope instead of bitterness. They taught me to help others who are struggling, to believe in community, and to maintain my faith even when life becomes uncomfortable or confusing. Those lessons didn’t always feel monumental at the time. Still, they have followed me into every season of my life, quietly steady and consistently present.

With my birthday just two days away (new year baby energy, y’all 🎉), I feel more grounded than ever. I feel less rushed, less distracted, and more certain of who I am and where I come from. There’s a calm that comes with knowing your values and understanding that they didn’t just appear out of nowhere.

So, here’s a shoutout to two people who kept showing up and giving all they had, even when it wasn’t perfect. Especially when it wasn’t ideal. That sincerity, effort, intention, and love ended up meaning everything.
