Where Faith, Family, and Check-Ins Meet

Daily writing prompt
Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

Many moons ago, my parents decided to create a weekly Saturday check-in before we prayed and asked God to guide us through the coming week. What started as a simple idea evolved into one of the most grounding traditions in our family.

The intention was clear: bonding, ensuring everyone felt supported, and creating a space where nothing important slipped through the cracks. It also became our designated time for conflict resolution, a place where everyone could speak honestly about their feelings and hopefully find a sense of resolution.

As a teenager, I’ll admit I wasn’t always thrilled. Sometimes it meant pausing a TV show, hanging up the phone, or being pulled away from whatever felt more important at the time. Other times, I experienced it as a full-on lecture. 😅 But even then, whether I wanted to admit it or not, something about it still mattered.

Now, years later, even with distance and different locations, we still find ways to make it happen. Sometimes only half of us are present, and other times schedules are chaotic, but the check-in still occurs. Somehow, we always look forward to it.

Another tradition I deeply cherish is praying for one another at the beginning of anything new: a new semester, a new course, a new job, a trip, or even a short gathering, five minutes is enough. We pause, pray, and remind each other: you are not alone. We see you, we support you, and we wish you well as you step into what’s next.

We may not be considered overly religious, but we are deeply rooted in our faith. It’s woven into how we move, how we support one another, and how we center ourselves before transitions; big or small.

Our faith is at the center of everything we do, and these traditions serve as quiet reminders of that.

Thank you, God. 🙏🏾✨
