Oh, absolutely.
Haiti is the first Black-led republic in the world. Every time I reflect on the sacrifices made by my ancestors, a sense of pride fills my chest so intensely that it almost hurts. I think about our long, relentless struggle for survival, how our fight for freedom has helped liberate nations still under colonial rule, and how we continue to pay the price for daring to be free.
To be patriotic means feeling tears well up at night when I think of home. It means carrying my country with me wherever I go.
The red and blue of my nation run through my veins; a truth that no distance, no ocean, and no history could ever erase.
