Why Should you Stand your Grounds about Boundaries?
Now tell me why as soon as you start establishing boundaries with people, they act as you were doing them wrong?
I don’t know but maybe it is because we don’t have this culture of respecting each other’s space and way of living. As an Haitian young woman, I had to learn about boundaries and apply them into my relationship with people. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, let’s break it down real quick: “boundaries are basically the limits you choose to apply into your life in your different relationships with the people around you. You choose to be in charge of how you interact with them and what you allow into your life”.
Now, let me tell you that it is not an easy process and people might not understand why you don’t allow them the things you used to. But it is about building healthier relationships and protecting your mental health.
With that being said mental health in the black community….. This is another topic and it can be a struggle to get around it.
Going back on establishing boundaries…. I can tell you that it is the best thing that has ever happened to me in the last few years. I did lose a few people along the way, but that’s okayyyyyy sis! Not everyone is for the long ride. I know what I am expecting from people that I allow in my circle, they know what I am about, and we work together to be better for each other.
PS: I am still trying to establish boundaries between my parent’s credit card and my shopping list… and it’s a struggle…. but that is also okayyyyyy!!!! Trusting the process is key.
