When I first arrived in the United States, I needed shoes for work. I remember buying my first pair from Payless, even though they were not a famous brand. These sneakers weren’t the most comfortable, but they did the job. They cost me $34.99, which was a significant amount for me at the time. For the next four months, I wore them three times a week to a workplace open to hiring non-English speakers. During this time, I was still adjusting to a new country with a different language, figuring out how to pay my monthly bills, and dealing with extreme weather conditions. Despite all this, those shoes became an essential part of my journey and a symbol of my resilience.
