Have you ever felt the love?
I grew up in Haiti where colorism is so prevalent that mothers of young children tend to use bleaching soaps on them or during their pregnancy. I don’t remember seeing dark skinned girls in popular bands videos. I also don’t think they were too many dark skinned women winning beauty contest or generally being on TV.
When I was in high school a math teacher decided to give his personal opinion on who was beautiful in the classroom. I don’t why that man thought using my parents money not to teach what he was paid for was a good idea…. but he did. He started rating the students “beauty “ and his only criteria were skin color and hair texture. Of course he was a dark skinned man who was so proud to explain why his wife was a lighter tone; cleaning his family. The year after his insensitive remarks, many of the dark skinned girls of the class started bleaching their skins. Of course, they were criticized for doing so! The hypocrisy doesn’t stop!
One time, a friend told me that I would basically be a beauty queen if I had a lighter skin color. I have the height, the face, the eloquence, the style, the intelligence, but too bad that my skin was so dark. Lol! I don’t blame her because she grew up listening to what beauty standards were in our society. People also thought I needed advice for my nose proportions, like I wasn’t Haitian! However, one of the most terrible things I’ve ever read was from a women advertising bleaching products to clean my skin via messenger… (She was shocked that I went full Manje Sale mood on that ass) You wonder why!
People tend to swipe those issues under the rugs and act as they were not part of the damages done to our people by the colonizers. As if light skinned people were not the result of the rape of our African women by the French and Spanish savages who colonized our ancestors. They feel closer to the white men ignoring their mothers’s pains and humiliations. Oh well!
Now that I am away from my country, I’ve discovered that the experiences of black Caribbean, Asian, Afro Latinas, and dark skinned African American women are similar. A lot black men, especially darker skin tone have the tendency of bashing women that look like them…… Why?… Have you heard of self-hatred? Oh okayyyyyy. Time for some readings 😌😌😌
Watching as show like Black is King brings so much joy and emotions to me, well it’s Beyoncé anyways 🤷🏾♀️! But I really enjoyed every bit of it because I have the feelings that young girls, more than ever need to see those type of representations on TV, billboards, runway shows, hospitals, schools, universities, etc. All types of hair and skin tone within the black community need to be valued and celebrated!
PS: Sis, if you have to use five different types of products for a wash n go….. just let it go and celebrate your Bantu knots. Also, you should look for new YouTube tutorials 😉😉😉 #justsaying

I am what is considered like “light skin” in Haiti and while I was growing up I could experienced the privileges associate with that. Now that I have a BF who’s darker than my complexion I found many people telling me that “they thought that I liked lighter skin”, hinting that he’s too dark for me…
ven black people is being segregationist to each other but we play offended when white people is being racist…

Pandan m’ap li eksperyans ou fè ak profesè nan klas ou a msonje mt fè Yon eksperyans lekol tou men ki te ekzateman opoze pa w la. Men se te Yon grenn fwa tou sa te rive. Te gen Yon demwazel nan klas la ki te ranpli tout kondisyon pou Moun bèl sosyete a mande : grimèl, bèl cheve, fès elatriye. Se te rèn bote sa l la pou mpa di tout lekòl la. Tout Moun , (pwòf, elèv) toujou ap admire bote li.
Epi ( kontrèman ak tout Moun) gen yon pròf chimie ki te prefere bote pa m pou koulè po m. PS: nan fi yo koulè po m te pi fonse. Profesè a toujou ap fè elòj pou fi koulè po nwa fonse. Li rele tout fi ki pi nwa yo ” mes fleurs noirs”. Malgre li pat janm di demazel grimèl la pat yon flè men poutèt se pat limenm ak lòt medam po klè yo prof la mete en valè ( jan sa toujou fèt )li di pròf la ” mkonprann ou wi, ou pa konn bon bagay, ou pa konn gou bouch ou”. Ou ka wè aklè nan ki nivo sa te vekse li.
Men nòmalman pwòf la pat gen dwa pou vin mete etikèt ( pi bèl, mwens bèl ) sou nou paske sa pa antre nan kad travay li. Anpil fwa pwof yo depase limit yo nan egzèsis pwofesyon yo. Bref koze nyans nan koulè po sa fè anpil dega nan sosyete a epi malerezman kontinye ap fè dega.

I like this post. But, it’s gonna take time to change black people mentality. Do you know even in office, they have this kind of reaction?
Je n’ai pas la peau noire, je suis un mélange. Je me souviens qu’on nous appelait selon cette nuance de couleur (moi et mes sœurs) café au lait. Mais ça n’a pas empêché qu’on subisse des discriminations par rapport aux filles qui ont un teint plus clair. On nous a formaté ainsi. Comme tu as mentionné plus haut, dans les pubs de nos tendres enfances surtout je me souviens que toutes les personnes avaient le teint clair, enfant ou adulte. Quand pour la première fois, j’étais déjà une adolescente j’ai vu une publicité pour un déodorant avec une femme noire, elles étaient environ 5 filles noires, celle qui étaient en bleu faisait un solo, j’ai dit wow, ala yon fi lèd papa. Son accoutrement, le maquillage l’avait rendu plus laide (j’ai compris ceci en grandissant) Mais je pense que c’était par rapport à sa couleur que j’ai porté le jugement quand je l’avais vu pour la première fois.
J’ai appris également à ne pas juger les gens par rapport à un incident qui est arrivé à une amie. On avait 12 ans environ à l’époque, on était dans la même salle et une élève qui avait une couleur de peau mélangé a pris un malin plaisir à ennuyer mon amie de peau noire mais dit sur un ton en vue de la rabaisser. Mon amie a porté plainte à notre professeure, qui elle aussi avait la peau noire, elle les a fait passé devant et a dit à l’autre élève qu’elle n’est pas supérieure à mon amie parce que sa peau était de couleur différente, elle l’a traitée de (peau à l’envers) c’était également un jugement. Mais elle a fait savoir à toute la classe de ne jamais accepté d’être la risée ou la critique de personne à cause de la couleur de notre peau. De là étant, j’ai commencé à apprécié la couleur noire, malgré cela ça m’arrive des fois de dire qu’une personne noire ou blanche est laide parce que j’ai une conception de la beauté qui ne se base pas sur la couleur mais sur certains critères qui d’après moi est encore un jugement. Il y a beaucoup à faire, je vous l’assure. J’ai une cousine noire âgée de 16 ans qui est raciste, pour elle toutes les personnes noires sont laides. D’après elle une personne de teint clair même avec un défaut est belle automatiquement à ses yeux.
Au boulot, on m’appelle belle femme noire, tandis qu’on ne met aucun qualificatif pour les autres filles de teint clair, on les dit belle femme tout simplement le directeur oui s’il vous plaît. Il y a une collègue noire qui n’aime aucun garçon noir, elle a en tête un mâle au teint clair avec les cheveux soyeux ou bouclés comme futur époux mais, mais pas de cheveux crépus même s’il a le teint clair, elle n’en veut pas. Bagay yo anpil tande mmmmmmm.

Merci ma chérie de ton soutient!!!!!! En fait cette discussion ne fait que commencer! Dans une post société coloniale, la haine de soi est enracinée! Donc il est plus facile qu’une personne d’une autre culture apprécie la beauté d’une personne de peau foncée. Elle se manifeste dans toute les classes sociales et les effets sont bien entendus nef! Spécialement parmi les adolescents.
