What has been the best purchase I’ve ever made? My degrees.
Now, before anyone reminds me about the student loans, yes, I’m aware. I’m still paying for them, and with interest! But despite that reality, I can honestly say they were worth every penny.
Those degrees provided me with more than just an education. They brought me stability, opportunities, friendships, unforgettable experiences, and a version of myself that I might never have discovered otherwise. Some of the most meaningful people I’ve met and some of my greatest lessons came during those years.
As a Black woman, education has always held a deeper significance for me. It isn’t just about earning a diploma; it’s about opening doors, creating opportunities, and sometimes changing the trajectory of your life. While a degree doesn’t guarantee success, it can give you access to rooms that might have otherwise remained closed.
Of course, there are many paths to success, and not everyone needs a college degree to build a fulfilling life. But for me, it was the right choice. It expanded my perspective, challenged my way of thinking, and prepared me for a career that allows me to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day.
So yes, every month when I make that student loan payment, I do sigh a little. Then I remember everything those degrees have given me. In retrospect, they weren’t just the best purchase I ever made; they were one of the best investments I’ve ever made in myself.
